Welcome To The Virginia Public Library (VPL)

The Virginia Public Library is part of the Arrowhead Library System. The Library has books, eBooks, audio books, eAudiobooks, music, feature films, TV series and more. The library offers storytime for children, after school programs, author visits, take and make crafts and much more. The Media department has public computers, a copier and microfilm reader. With your library card you can check out a MN State Park pass, projectors, screens, polarity testers, adventure packs, and frisbee golf. The library has 24×7 WiFi access. Friends of the Library group that sponsors many many programs at the library.

Minnesota State Park Library Passes

The Virginia Public Library is participating in the MN State Parks Library Program, which allows libraries to offer free state park permits that can be checked out for a seven-day period. Virginia Public Library has two library park passes. All you need to check out a library park pass is your library card! After the seven-day usage, patrons can recycle their passes; it is not necessary to return them.

Minnesota State Parks Library Pass users are encouraged to take the survey after they visit a Park.

Exceptions to this occur when a holiday falls on a Saturday and is observed the preceding Friday, and when it falls on a Sunday and is observed on the following Monday.

About Us

The Virginia Public Library is part of the Arrowhead Library System network. This network enhances the value of all types of libraries to communities in Northeastern Minnesota.

The library’s building was completed in 1912 and opened in January 1913. In 1982 the library was remodeled and expanded, reopening to all in 1984. The library entrance was updated in 2020 to be more accessible to visitors.

WiFI is always available, and no password is needed.

There are two kinds of donations the library commonly receives.  Monetary and material donations.

Monetary:  If you wish to donate money to the library, you may do so throughout the year.  The library can accept cash or checks.  Please make checks out to the “Friends of the Virginia Public Library”.
Materials:  Books and media items are accepted each year before the annual book sale. The Friends of the Virginia Public Library will announce the dates for the sale and donation via their site. (link to FOL page) set date and time that they will accept donations.  
*Please note that the library has limited space and cannot accept physical donations (books DVDs etc.)

If you are looking to donate an item to be added to our collection, please call the library for more information.

Book Sale Drop-Off will be September 2023.

Dates and times will be posted in August 2023.

The library does not accept credit/debit cards.  Cash or check only.

The library has public computers for use that are connected to a printer and a copier that you can print items from your personal device.

The library does not fax.

Bring a photo ID or official mail addressed to you at your current address and you will need to complete an application at the library.

Yes, the library has 8 public computers in the Media Department and you can sign up at the Media Desk.

There are 3 Online Catalogue computers to help you search for library items.

Virginia Public Library has a public phone for local calls located upstairs at the main circulation desk. 

There is a 5-minute time limit. 

This phone is unable to receive calls.

VPL Commission

The Virginia Public Library Commission advises on matters of library policy, administration, operation, and service. Commissioners are appointed by the City Council and serve a 3 year term.

The Library Commission meets at 5:00 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month in the library auditorium.
